Beating the crowds
- Tuesday to Thursday is quietest almost everywhere, and often cheaper.
- Buy the day ticket online ahead of time on an RFID card. The resort says buying before a holiday weekend skips the window line.
- Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends, since the resort mostly serves Phoenix and Tucson day-trippers. Thursday and Friday visits avoid the Phoenix weekend crowd.
- Reports say Sunrise Peak gets crowded and the backside is usually less busy. Check the trail map before choosing a lift.
- Check AZ 511 (az511.gov or dial 511) before leaving. The plowed approach is SR 260 to the north end of SR 273, since SR 273 south toward Big Lake closes for the winter. Drive times run about 3.5 to 4 hours from Phoenix, and storm days can add much more.
