Beating the crowds

  • Tuesday to Thursday is quietest almost everywhere, and often cheaper.
  • Plan on Tuesday to Thursday, when Old School Days pricing applies and weekday crowds are lighter. Old School Days in 2026 ran Tuesday through Thursday, excluding Feb 17 to 19.
  • On busy weekends the base parking lot fills before the 9 am lift opening, so arriving around 8 am is the usual advice.
  • Check Caltrans QuickMap or dial 511 before leaving. Eastbound chain control usually starts near Kingvale. Old Highway 40 over the pass can close in storms, and the I-80 route through Exit 174 is the alternate.
  • Sunday afternoon returns on I-80 from Truckee and the Donner Summit corridor are the heaviest traffic of the weekend, so leaving earlier avoids the rush.
