Beating the crowds

Tuesday to Thursday is quietest almost everywhere, and often cheaper.
Boreal has free, first-come parking with no weekend reservation system, so arrive early on Saturdays and holidays to get a spot in the main lot next to the Base Lodge.
Do not park on Donner Pass Road (Old Highway 40). The resort's Donner Summit guide says it is illegal and hazardous. Use the main lot.
Go Time tickets let you pick a start time and ski until 8 pm. Choosing a late-morning or afternoon start avoids the early-morning arrival wave, and the night skiing program runs 3 pm to 8 pm daily.
Friday traffic through the East Bay and Sacramento is heaviest from about 3 pm to 8 pm. For Saturday trips, leaving before 6 am avoids chain-control queues at Donner Pass; check Caltrans chain requirements before leaving.
