Beating the crowds

  • Tuesday to Thursday is quietest almost everywhere, and often cheaper.
  • Arrive by 8:45 a.m. on busy days. A reviewer reported the lot filling by noon over Christmas 2024, so late arrivals on holiday weekends may have to turn around.
  • Weekend and holiday parking in the preferred lot costs $30, while weekday parking is free. Preferred pass holders have reserved lot access until 10 a.m. The parking-lot shuttle runs only on weekends and holidays, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • The west-side Polar Express chair is the main crowd point on weekends and holidays. Ride the front-side Mokelumne Express six-pack, which has higher capacity, to spread out the crowd.
  • Highway 4 gets chain controls above Dorrington or Tamarack and can close at Arnold in big storms. Check Caltrans QuickMap before leaving, and avoid Friday afternoon departures from the Bay Area.
